Very few diamonds are actually cut to proper proportions for a simple reason, the cutter purposely sacrifices the ideal proportions to retain the maximum weight from the rough diamond. This extra weight adds nothing to the beauty of the diamond, only to its cost. With the ideally proportioned diamond, weight must be sacrificed to attain the greatest brilliance and fire.
The Ideal Cut Lazare Diamond has the precise angles and symmetry to yield the ultimate in beauty, brilliance and fire. Less than 1% of all diamonds meet this exacting standard. This diamond ideal is not an abstraction, but an exact mathematical formula developed by the Belgian mathematician and diamond cutter, Marcel Tolkowsky, early in the 20th century. This "ideal" was brought to America by Tolkowsky's uncle, Lazare Kaplan, whose firm remains the most famous name in ideal cut diamonds.
To ensure the cutting quality of our diamonds, Silverscape Designs' gemologists use the standards established by the American Gem Society to grade the cut of our round diamonds.
