Arts Night Out: Octoberfest

This past Friday was October’s Arts Night Out, and we had an amazing time at our Octoberfest night with Provisions. If you were unable to attend the event, here is a recap of what happened, and the fun quiz to match you with a designer beer pairing from the event.

The night ran with a presentation of a designer and followed up by the beer that Provisions paired with them.

The first designer up is Rustico. Rustico began when Isaac Childs and a few friends picked a journey to live authentic by designing true-to-yourself accessories through American artisanship. They are still trekkin’ it, encouraging the individual to step outside and reach within, to explore and create. Childs loves to travel and wanted to write and journal, but could not find a journal good enough to last through his adventures, so he made his own and they are all made with top-grain leather!

The company has two goals

  1. Bring back authentic American craftsmanship.
  2. Business will never get in the way of friendship.

“Rustico continues to compliment and inspire the simple, but rooted perspective of living authentic.”

Essence: Simple, Rustic, Leather, Clean

The beer paired with this fantastic leather company is Uinta Brewing- "Sea Legs"  a brett- porter, out of Utah. Brett, or brettanomyces is a yeast that was once thought to be simply 3 different strands.  Once people looked closer, they found that the yeast has many variants that are fun to play with in beer.  In this beer it Gives the porter a bit of funk.

Up next we have Whisky Frames! Hand-crafted rustic, yet refined photo frames made from authentic Scottish whisky barrels. Most of their frames are hand numbered and they can be entered into their frame origin archive and you are able to see which distillery or cooperage the frame came from. You can also personalize your frames with family tartans, monogrammed rivets, laser engraving and picking your own Harris Tweed. The frames are lined with Harris Tweed (unless you choose to do a family tartan). Harris Tweed comes from the Outer Hebrides. Whisky Frames buys directly from the weavers themselves to ensure quality and province.

Essence: Whisky, Rural, Rich

Perfectly paired with Whiskey Barrel Aged Old Engine Oil (Scotland) one of the more impressive whiskey barrel aged beers that is regularly available on the shelf. Beautiful characteristics that just make the stout that much more wholesome than a non-barrel aged stout.

Next is the classic glassware company that is a staple for us here at Silverscape Designs, Simon Pearce! Simon grew up in Ireland with a family of artisans, attention to detail and aesthetics were part of his everyday life. By age 16 Simon Pearce had begun his craft as an apprentice at his father’s pottery studio. He moved on from pottery to work with notable glassmakers all over Europe before he finally opened his own namesake studio. He has been inspired by centuries-old Georgian glass making techniques and using the finest materials. Simon sets out to create designs that bring pleasure and inspiration with every use, every day!

Now living in the age of bigger, better, faster, the Pearce family believe simplicity, quality and, artisanship are tenets of a better way of life. From hand-thrown pottery to lead-free crystal glassware made with custom molds and purpose-built furnaces. Each hand crafted piece carries a story that lends meaning authenticity and grace to every use.

Essence: Classic, Unassuming, Clean, High-Quality

The perfect match for Simon Pearce is Zero Gravity - "Bolibok"  a Belgian style saison, Vermont. There are plenty of saisons out there, but this one is bright, complex and balanced!

Last but certainly not least we have Bering Time. A Danish company that was started by adventurer and businessman Rene Kaerskov and his business partners Michael Witt Johansen and Lars Gram-Skjonnemann. When Rene jumped out of a helicopter onto the ice of the cold artic he was struck with an idea. When he landed at the most northern point of the globe, he was overcome by the simple beauty and infinite white expanse of the eternal ice. His descriptions of the exquisite splendor of his trip of the artic landscape and the beautiful photos of his trip are what inspired the trio to start a new watch brand. One that would be as pure clean and breathe takingly beautiful as the artic itself. This is when Bering was born, named after the Danish sailor Vitus Bering.

Essence: Smooth, Icy, Fresh, Sleek

What pairs with a Danish watch company? Lady of the Cofitachequi from, Denmark. The Danish brewery focuses on tradition in beers. This is not like the IPAs we are used to seeing on our market. A bit more grain and malt character. The focus is on the build of the beer, not just about making a juicy, hoppy, resigny beers like a lot of American producers are doing.

Those are the wonderful pairings of designers and beers. If you were not able to attend the event. Below is the questionnaire that will match you to a pairing so you can shop the perfect designer and beer for you.
